Is it time to rewrite the American dream?
We are a country of immigrants. Immigrants, our ancestors, that flocked to this country because it was the land of opportunity. It was one of, if not the only, countries in the world where hard work could lead to a rising social-economic status. Historian James Truslow Adams said, “The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” This ideal shaped the culture and life of Americans for many years.
Now, that ideal seems to be dead. Now it seems the American Dream is to suffer an inconvenience and sue the crap out of someone so that you can capitalize on an inconvenience and never work another day in your life. What brings this to mind is the stupidity of the people suing the NFL because of the seating situation at the Super Bowl. Yes it stinks that fans paid, got all excited about attending the Super Bowl, and then didn’t get to see the game because the NFL screwed up BIG TIME, but how much is that inconvenience worth? How can anyone argue that missing the Super Bowl is worth more than what the NFL is currently offering these people? IT IS A FOOTBALL GAME! But why be rational when you can pay some crackpot lawyer to attempt to hoover as much money as possible out of the situation? Why not try to make this a public relations nightmare for the NFL, which doesn’t need any added PR issues with labor issues threatening next season, and make a small mint out of your inconvenience? $2,400 a seat, triple face value, isn’t enough. Heck no. These dillholes need to chase the new American Dream: suffer an inconvenience and sue the crap out of someone so you never have to work another day in your life. No where in the new American Dream is
hard work, talent, or anything resembling those values. Just get lucky. Hope you get sick so you can go to the doctor and sue them because they cannot magically cure you. Hope you get fired so you can sue for wrongful termination. Those are much easier than ACTUALLY earning the money.
Do you remember the movie Office Space? There was a character named Tom Smykowski who lived the new American Dream, albeit a little more of an inconvenience than missing the Super Bowl. He was hit by a car and was as excited as someone that won the lottery. I wonder how many people would willingly be smacked by a car, suffer serious but non-life-threatening injuries, if that meant that never had to work another day in their life. After all, that is the new American Dream. Screw hard work. Screw putting in your time. Screw ability or talent. Just get smacked by a car or inconvenienced at a sporting event, that is a MUCH easier route to financial superiority.
